Eddie Jordan dies aged 76: the most colourful of the F1 mavericks

Iconic F1 Team Owner and former TV pundit Eddie Jordan OBE has passed away, aged 76.

The Irishman was one of the most well-loved and entertaining figures in Formula One over the last four decades and leaves a legacy larger than he could have ever imagined.

A statement from Jordan’s family announced his passing.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit and entrepreneur.

“He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of 20th March 2025 at the age of 76, after battling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months.

“He was working until the last, having communicated on St Patrick’s Day, about his ambitions for London Irish Rugby Football Club, of which he had recently become Patron.”

“EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow.”

Eddie Jordan ran the Jordan F1 team, for which the likes of Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Damon Hill, and Martin Brundle all raced for.

The team won four races in its time in the sport between 1998 and 2003.

Jordan was sold in the mid-2005’s to become Midland Racing. The team then became Spyker, before being sold and renamed to Force India in 2008.

After financial trouble and a rebrand to Racing Point, Lawrence Stroll would eventually turn the once Jordan team into the current Aston Martin F1 Team.

Following his career in the paddock, Eddie Jordan would turn his head to TV punditry with the BBC, and then later Channel Four.

F1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali, says he was “deeply saddened to hear about the sudden loss.”

“With his inexhaustible energy he always knew how to make people smile, remaining genuine and brilliant at all times.”

“Eddie has been a protagonist of an era of F1 and he will be deeply missed.”

“In this moment of sorrow, my thoughts and those of the entire Formula 1 family are with his family and loved ones.”

Eddie Jordan was one of the greats – opinion

It’s hard to now imagine a world of F1 where Eddie Jordan won’t be an ever-present.

His character was that type of infectiousness that very few in F1, and indeed the world, could ever dream of having.

A laugh and a smile, yet someone you still took incredibly seriously, Jordan had such a unique character that F1 will struggle to fulfil.

F1 has truly lost one of the greats of the paddock and many will miss him.
