Punk rock star slammed for ‘evil’ lyrics at Bernie Sanders rally

Laura Jane Grace, the transgender lead singer of the American punk band Against Me!, stirred controversy with her lyrics during a performance at a Bernie Sanders rally.

The event was part of Sanders’ Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here tour and took place in Kenosha, Wisconsin on March 7. The national tour sees the Vermont politician visiting various parts of the country, accompanied by a Republican representative, to critique the Trump administration’s authoritarianism and its favoritism towards billionaires like Elon Musk. During the rally, Laura performed Your God (God’s D–k), a song from the band she founded in 1997, and its explicit lyrics sparked outrage.

Lines such as “Does your God have a big fat d—-? Cause it feels like he’s f—ing me” and “Does he shoot wads of honey and c– twice on Easter Sunday? / Can he c– a shotgun blast and shoot salvation up your a–? Does he chew c— like bubblegum And give b—- like a vacuum?” drew criticism from conservatives, Christians, and right-wing individuals.

A video of the performance circulated online, prompting conservative social media advocate Robby Starbuck to label the lyrics and the Democratic party as “pure evil.”

In a tweet posted on March 9, Starbuck wrote, “This is who the Democrats are now. Pure evil. Other lyrics are somehow even more grotesque and anti-Christian. These people are insane. Bernie Sanders is a lunatic and anti-Christian. Yes, this was at Bernie’s rally,” reports the Mirror US.

The controversial social media account Libs of TikTok, infamous for its hateful rhetoric and transphobic content, retweeted Starbuck’s video clip of the performance and labeled it “absolutely sickening.”

The account is managed by Chaya Raichik, a far-right figure who previously worked in real estate. Similar opinions flooded Twitter.

One user commented, “That’s extremely offensive. Shame on Bernie Sanders.”

Another posted: “God will not be mocked…” while someone else remarked, “Democrats are completely unhinged!”

Laura has previously taken the stage for Sanders, having performed with her band during his 2020 Democratic Party presidential primary campaign, presenting their track ‘Hanging Tree,’ whose chorus provocatively states “God is good and God is great, now get the f— out of the USA.”

The political song mentioned burning crosses and critiques of white supremacy and elitism in its condemnation of American society.
