On January 3, 1970, Edwarda was rushed to a hospital in Miami, Florida, after she began experiencing severe pain and uncontrollable shaking.

This caused dangerous sugar levels to build up in her system, leading to her falling unconscious and slipping into a diabetic coma.
Just before losing consciousness and entering the coma that would last over four decades, Edwarda reportedly told her mother: “Promise you won’t leave me.”
And she stayed true to her word. Edwarda’s family dedicated themselves to her care, ensuring she was looked after every single day.
Her parents spent years reading to her, playing her favorite music, repositioning her every two hours, bathing her, giving her insulin, and feeding her through a tube.
They continued this routine tirelessly until their passing in1976 and 2008. After that, her devoted sister, Colleen, took on the responsibility.

Over the years, people from all over the world made the journey to visit the ‘real-life Sleeping Snow White’ at her home. In 1983, Miami Herald columnist Charles Whited even claimed that Edwarda briefly woke up and said ‘Hey’ two nights in a row though she never spoke again.
Her sister shared her thoughts with the Herald, saying: “She taught me so much, and I’m talking about now – after she was in the coma. She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. She taught me about patience that I didn’t have before.”
Colleen wrote: “Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly at me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen.”
“She then closed her eyes and joined my Mom in Heaven.”
One user expressed: “I can’t imagine how hard it is to hold onto that hope for so long and it to not mean anything in the end. People have been crushed by so much less.”
“Nothing but sympathy for a mother who never stopped loving her daughter.”
