Veteran actor and rugged star of ‘Walking Tall” and Bond series, dies at 89

Joe Don Baker, renowned for his performances in Walking Tall and his unique dual role in the James Bond series, has passed away at the age of 89 due to lung cancer. He died on May 7, 2025, in Los Angeles, with the announcement of his death made public a few days later.

Hailing from Groesbeck, Texas, Baker initially served in the Army before pursuing a career in acting, where he honed his skills at the Actors Studio. His significant breakthrough occurred in 1973 when he portrayed Sheriff Buford Pusser in the successful film Walking Tall, which established him as a folk hero.

Baker portrayed complex and rugged characters in over 50 films, such as Charley Varrick, Cape Fear, and Mars Attacks!. He distinctively played both a Bond antagonist in The Living Daylights and a supporting character in GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies.

In addition to his work in film, he received a BAFTA nomination for Edge of Darkness. Personally, Baker was recognized for his passion for nature and literature, maintaining a humble demeanor despite his tough-guy persona.
