Researchers caution that Mount Spurr, recognized as one of the most hazardous volcanoes in the United States, could potentially erupt in the near future. Situated 80 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska, it has exhibited indications of heightened activity, leading experts to forecast an eruption within the coming weeks or months.
According to experts, Mount Spurr is exhibiting standard indicators of a potential eruption, such as seismic activity and the release of volcanic gases. Matt Haney from the Alaska Volcano Observatory states, ‘All four indicators are present.’
Although the precise timing remains uncertain, researchers are of the opinion that an eruption is probable. The volcano is presently under a Level Yellow alert, signifying heightened activity without any immediate threat.
An eruption may result in ashfall, mudflows, and pyroclastic flows. Although there are no nearby towns in danger, it is recommended that hikers and tourists remain vigilant and informed.
Mount Spurr has experienced several eruptions historically, notably in 1953 and 1992, which affected Anchorage and air travel. It is advised that residents of South Central Alaska take precautions against possible hazards.
