However, even celebrities face personal challenges and crises, often hidden from public view. The relationship between Justin Bieber and his mother, Pattie Mallette, has been tumultuous, and given her difficult upbringing, it is not surprising that their dynamic has been complex.
Pattie Mallette was born on April 2, 1975, in Stratford, Ontario, and hails from a French-Canadian heritage.
Unfortunately, her early life was overshadowed by a profound tragedy; at the age of two, Pattie experienced the heartbreaking loss of her five-year-old sister, Sally, who was killed in a traffic accident. This traumatic incident would leave a lasting impact on Pattie’s family and her formative years.
Pattie became a mother to Justin at the tender age of 17 while being single and facing numerous challenges. As reported by Daily Mail, she raised Justin independently in a low-income housing unit in Canada, with some assistance from her parents, who are Justin’s grandparents.
Pattie recounted enduring years of abuse and violence, beginning at the age of three. She stated, ‘My offenders include a male babysitter, the grandfather of one of my friends, and neighborhood children who were reportedly more mature than their age.’
By the time she turned 14, she started experimenting with various substances, engaged in shoplifting, and was expelled from school for igniting a fire in the bathroom. Tragically, the cycle of sexual abuse persisted, and in her book, Pattie recounts experiencing date rape at the age of 15. ‘I was sexually violated so many times that as the years went by it began to feel normal.
It’s a strange marriage – knowing something is wrong yet at the same time finding it familiar and commonplace,’ she expressed.
The star expressed in a 2015 interview with Billboard, as cited by Cosmopolitan, that he never wished for his mother to feel disappointment in him, acknowledging that she did.
They experienced a period of silence, which made it challenging to restore their trust; however, progress is being made. He described her as an incredible woman whom he loves.
Presently, that challenging phase in Justin’s life is largely behind him, and Pattie takes great pride in her son. She conveyed on Instagram, ‘I am immensely proud of the remarkable young man you have become and the one you are continuing to develop into.
While none of us are perfect and we will always require patience and grace from one another, your authentic and evolving relationship with Jesus is clearly reflected in the choices you make each day and the positive ‘fruit’ you produce. I respect your character and integrity. You are growing beautifully and possess wisdom beyond your years.’
