First-term Republican Representative Brandon Gill from Texas is urging the Trump administration to return Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota to her native Somalia.
Gill stated on Tuesday via the X platform, ‘America would improve if @IlhanMN were sent back to Somalia.’ His tweet included a video of Omar, in which she seems to be instructing fellow Somalis residing in the U.S. — potentially without legal status — on how to evade federal immigration authorities.
This video was shared by conservative figure Greg Price, who commented, ‘Ilhan Omar is now conducting workshops for Somalis living in the country unlawfully, offering guidance on how to prevent deportation.’
Another individual stated: ‘She is engaging in federal offenses by advising undocumented immigrants on how to evade ICE. She warrants investigation and prosecution.’ Later, Gill remarked that ‘we should have never permitted Ilhan Omar to enter our nation.’
A representative for Gill informed The Hill, ‘Representative Omar’s actions raise concerns regarding her loyalty—whether it lies with the American populace or with undocumented individuals from Somalia.
Representative Gill merely expressed that it is shameful for a current Congresswoman and U.S. citizen to aid in the unlawful entry of Somali immigrants into our country.’ In the video, Omar detailed the steps that undocumented Somalis or those whose documentation may have expired should take if approached by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.
Omar advised the reporter that there is no obligation to respond to their inquiries. He suggested simply stating that a lawyer has recommended refraining from answering questions. He emphasized that revealing one’s name, immigration status, and method of entry is not compulsory. It is important to understand the laws, prepare accordingly, and avoid sharing information that one wishes to keep private.
Omar’s guidance comes as President Donald Trump’s new administration begins to fulfill his campaign promise of enforcing mass deportations, initially targeting illegal immigrant criminals. Tom Homan, the border czar with extensive experience as a Border Patrol officer and senior federal immigration official, has indicated that while the primary focus is on criminal aliens, anyone found to be unlawfully present in the country may face arrest and deportation.
Homan noted that in sanctuary cities, there will likely be numerous collateral arrests, meaning arrests of individuals who are not the primary targets but are found during the search for priority criminal offenders.
He stated that in order to apprehend these individuals, law enforcement may need to enter communities, leading to additional arrests. This statement was made in December, prior to Homan and Trump’s assumption of office.
“We will commence operations nationwide on the same day that Trump assumes office,” he stated. “Twenty-four field offices of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations — some of which oversee two or three states — will be instructed to actively seek out, apprehend, detain, and deport individuals in the United States who have previously been arrested for criminal activities.”
In December, the border czar confronted CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during a heated discussion regarding the administration’s extensive deportation efforts.
During an appearance on “The Source,” Homan remained resolute when Collins inquired about ICE agents targeting undocumented immigrants who are taking refuge in schools, churches, and hospitals to evade deportation. “What criteria, I wonder, is used to justify entering an elementary school?” Collins questioned. “We have been informed by immigration advocates that this may instill fear among parents during school drop-off times or similar situations.”
There should not be a chilling effect unless your child poses a threat to public safety or is involved in terrorism. If they do represent a danger to public safety or national security, it is appropriate for them to feel apprehensive, as we are actively seeking them out,” Homan stated.
