State Senator Angela Paxton, spouse of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has proposed legislation aimed at restricting the purchase of sex toys, a move perceived by many as part of a broader agenda by the Trump administration against masturbation.
The proposed bill seeks to penalize online vendors who sell what is classified as an ‘obscene device’ without verifying the buyer’s age. Retailers found in violation of these regulations could incur fines of up to $4,000 and face a potential prison sentence of one year.
Additionally, a separate bill from the Trump administration calls on major retailers, including Walmart, Costco, and CVS, to cease the resale of sex toys, limiting their availability to “sexually oriented businesses” such as adult shops and strip clubs.
As anticipated, these legislative efforts have sparked significant backlash, with critics accusing the Trump administration of intruding into individuals’ private lives. A Texas law enacted in 1973 prohibited the sale of sex toys throughout the state, and although it was amended in 2003 to criminalize the ownership of more than six such devices, this amendment was deemed unconstitutional five years later.
In an interview with the Daily Observer, Dr. Shamyra Howard, a licensed clinical social worker and sex educator, remarked, “Mandating identification for the purchase of a sex toy conveys the notion that pleasure is subject to regulation and scrutiny.
“It stigmatizes a completely normal activity and transforms a private, healthy experience into one that is shameful.
“This type of legislation does not serve to protect individuals; rather, it humiliates them. It imposes unnecessary obstacles and perpetuates damaging stigmas that many have worked diligently to dismantle.” She further emphasized the advantages of using sex toys and the necessity of facilitating their purchase. “It is often overlooked that sex toys contribute not only to pleasure but also to overall sexual wellness.”
Men also utilize these devices for enjoyment as well as to address erectile dysfunction, neuropathy caused by diabetes, and inadequate blood circulation associated with hypertension.
Certain devices are specifically created to aid in pain management, promote pelvic floor health, and even assist individuals in coping with mental health challenges through stress relief. Additionally, they can help restore intimacy following medical interventions or traumatic experiences.
The recent opposition to masturbation by Trump and his administration has caught many off guard and provoked significant frustration.
